The Winged Dragon of Ra

October 18, 2012

The Winged Dragon of Ra is one of the strongest monsters in the game in the anime. This is the real card, but in my opinion, it is a disappointment to the real Winged Dragon of Ra.

The Winged Dragon of Ra’s effect remained unknown for many years back when the only copy of The Winged Dragon of Ra was the card in the show with no effect and a small description. Now that we can see The Winged Dragon of Ra’s effect, we can realize how strong this monster really is. The Winged Dragon of Ra cannot be Special Summoned, and you must Tribute 3 monsters to Normal Summon this card. You cannot Set The Winged Dragon of Ra, but with its effect, I don’t know why anyone would set The Winged Dragon of Ra even if they could. The Normal Summon of this card cannot be negated, and when this card is Normal Summoned, Spells, Traps, and the effects of other cards cannot be activated. When this card is Normal Summoned, you can pay life points so that you have only 100 life points left, and this card gains ATK and DEF equal to the amount of Life Points paid. You can pay 1000 life points to target 1 monster on the field and destroy that target.

Summing It Up (My Objections)

The Winged Dragon of Ra was one of the strongest monsters in the game that could easily be considered as legendary, but the legal card is anything by a legend. What turns me off is that you cannot Special Summon The Winged Dragon of Ra at all, but in the anime, The Winged Dragon of Ra was Special Summoned countless times, especially with Monster Reborn. I also remember a time when The Winged Dragon of Ra gained ATK and DEF equal to the combined ATK and DEF of the monsters used to Tribute Summon this card. If you use the effect where you pay life points until you have 100 Life Points left, you can’t use an effect that requires you to pay 1000 life points. The Phoenix Mode also mysteriously disappears which allows The Winged Dragon of Ra to destroy all of your opponent’s monsters, even Slifer The Sky Dragon in the anime when it had 6000 ATK.

The legal version of The Winged Dragon of Ra is very misleading, and I think that this effect makes The Winged Dragon of Ra turn from the strongest Egyptian God Card to the weakest Egyptian God Card. Konami got Obelisk and Slifer (who is very expensive) correct, but this Ra is anything but an original.

What’s your opinion on the issue? I think The Winged Dragon of Ra is getting badly misrepresented.

Ras definitely more playable than slifer. I have all three legal versions in a deck around them, an i can tell u that obelisk is the most practical, ra’s the second most due to otk potential and slifer has no specific play style and is situational. Ra’s also by far the strongest attack wise if u summon him early.

I think they should have made it more like the original
