Gate Guardian (9/02/12 Card of the Day)

September 2, 2012

This post also contains information about each of the three Monster Cards that must be Tributed in order to Special Summon Gate Guardian.

Gate Guardian is a blast from the past that proved to be a powerful card with 3750 ATK and 3400 DEF. This Level 11 monster has been known for its power, but the other 3 monsters that must be Tributed to Special Summon this powerful card are also strong and have great effects.

Gate Guardian has high ATK, but the effects of Sanga of the Thunder, Kazejin, and Suijin are all incredible, and it would only be fair to go over what each of the three monsters do. Gate Guardian is much stronger than the other 3 monsters, but do the other monster cards’ effects outmatch the Gate Guardian itself?

Sanga of the Thunder

Sanga the Thunder is a Level 7 monster with 2600 ATK and 2200 DEF that will make an opponent think twice before attacking. During your opponent’s Damage Calculation, you can reduce the ATK of a monster attacking this card to 0. That means that the Gate Guardian with its 3750 ATK would stand no match to Sanga the Thunder. However, Sanga the Thunder’s effect can only be used once when it is face-up on the field. After Sanga the Thunder uses its effect, it can no longer use its effect making it similar to a Normal Monster. Once Sanga the Thunder already uses its effect on another monster, Gate Guardian could destroy this monster easily.

Suijin

Suijin is a Level 7 monster card with 2500 ATK and 2400 DEF with the same effect as Sanga the Thunder. Suijin is still strong with its 2500 ATK, but after the effect is used, Suijin would stand no chance against Gate Guardian.

Kazejin

Just like Suijin and Sanga the Thunder, Kazejin can reduce the ATK of an opponent’s monster attacking this card to 0 which would make your opponent think twice before attacking. The effect can only be used once while this card remains face-up on the field.

Summing It Up

Gate Guardian is a powerful monster with 3750 ATK and 3400 DEF that can destroy nearly any monster in the game. Its three counterparts, Sanga the Thunder, Suijin, and Kazejin are able to stay on the field for a long time as well because of their high ATK/DEF stats as well as an effect that can reduce an attacking monster’s ATK to 0 when the card and attacking monster are involved in a battle. When armed with their effects, Sanga the Thunder, Suijin, and Kazejin can easily dismantle the Gate Guardian. However, there will be a point when these 3 monsters cannot use their effects any longer. When these 3 monsters or at least 2 of the 3 monsters can no longer use their effects, and you need a monster with high ATK, then you should Special Summon the Gate Guardian. However, if you do Special Summon the Gate Guardian, you are giving up 3 monsters with over 2000 ATK that could make a difference on the field. If a monster on your opponent’s side of the field has over 3000 ATK and less than 3750 ATK, then it would be a good idea to Special Summon the Gate Guardian if the other 3 monster’s effects have already been used. With the Gate Guardian, it is all about timing because the 3 monsters are hard enough to get on your side of the field.
